Chapters 1-15.

Here's the translation for chapter 1.

I'm having some trouble with the title. The phrase 花に嵐 is an idiom that means you're trying to get something nice, but you're impeded or it doesn't go as hoped (as if you went to go see the flowers blooming, but there was a storm that day, I think). I don't think that the literal translation "flowers in a storm" or "a storm through flowers" conveys the actual meaning, and to me that just sounds really ominous. I've seen "every rose has its thorns" suggested as a somewhat equivalent English idiom, but perhaps that's too much of a change. Maybe something like "scattered petals" might capture it better. Or we could just go with the literal translation.

Anyone have any opinions on what to do?

>> No.21850

Or, I forgot to say, we could just leave the title untranslated as Hana ni Arashi.

>> No.21861

I think you can just leave the original name with some translator's note at the end of the chapter. Also your interpretation is not 'quite' correct even though it's close. 花に嵐 is part of the phrase "月に群雲、花に嵐", which can be interpreted as good things are even more likely to be spoiled, or misfortunes often come at time of great happiness.

Quite an ominous name for such a cute story though.

>> No.21863

Okay. Thanks for the advice, and for the correction.

>> No.21864

Also if we're picking on detail you're missing out the やさしく before 見守ってほしい. So it should be: "i hope you watch over me, gently".

>> No.21865

That was deliberate. I think the English sounds better without "gently", and the phrase "watch over me" already implies kind regard.

The lines where you added periods are all written directly onto the page in the author's handwriting—they're not in bubbles. I generally don't put punctuation at the end of these written lines because it's too easy for the small black dot to blend into the background art and get mixed up. Plus they're all sentence fragments, so it doesn't make much sense to have a period at the end anyways.

And yes, しゃーいな is short for "しかたがない" or "しょうがない", which is often translated as "it can't be helped" or "there's no way around it" or the general since of "I might as well take this course of action since there's no alternative." I had translated one as "There's nothing for it" and the other as "it can't be helped" because of the characters' different ways of speaking in general, but if "there's nothing for it" doesn't make sense, then go ahead and change that to "it can't be helped" as well.

>> No.21889

Ch02: http://www.mediafire.com/file/2y75x8jzmsyhhc2/Hana_ni_Arashi_ch2.rar

>> No.21890

Oh, thank you for that. I actually learned something new. “There's nothing for it” was unfamiliar to me and so I looked it up just now and read that it’s a British expression/phrase. “Nothing for it” didn’t make any sense to me at first, so I went with the common “can’t be helped” expression instead.

Regarding punctuations, I checked Chapter 1 again and some writings do end with periods/punctuations but some don’t. For example in Chapter 1, page 05, 3rd panel: “C’mon, shut up.” is not inside a bubble but in a clear background and ends with a period, but on page 15, 2nd panel: “Let’s go buy something too” doesn’t.

I agree that sentence fragments don’t necessarily need punctuations, such as:

> Page 02

Middle Panels, Right Writing:
And me —> And me.

And those texts written against background art since a period would blend right into it:

> Page 07

Bottom Right Panel, Writing:
All I have is rice —> All I have is rice.

But if the writings are complete sentences (subject-predicate) and they make sense, then they should at least end with periods or with the proper punctuation accordingly:

> Page 03

Bottom Left Panel, Lower Bubble, side text inside bubble:
I'm not doing it —> I'm not doing it.

> Page 07

Top Center Panel, Writing:
super delicious —> super delicious. (part of the writing "They’re super delicious”)

For consistency’s sake though, how should we go about this moving forward?

I apologise if I’m being too nit-picky for such trivial things but if it’s too much of a hassle and would just delay the chapters’ release, we can just go with the writings not having periods or punctuations. I’m good either way.

Thanks again for picking up this series!

>> No.21891

It might be inconsistent. I guess I've generally tried to drop periods from any handwritten bits, though some of them are in bubbles and some are out, and I probably forgot sometimes. I'm not entirely sure that this way is better, I had just thought it might look neater.

I'm fine with the chapters as they are, but if you think it'd be better differently, and if Asukaori doesn't mind changing it, then go ahead.

>> No.21893

I didn't add the periods because, as schuyguy said, they're sentence fragments. Personally, I think it's unnecessary, although they're part of the dialogue they're handwritten and put there in a more informal (?) way.

>> No.21894

Tsuki-chan, please post in the general discussion thread (link below). This thread is only for work in the Hana ni Arashi series, so only post here if you're interested in working on this particular series.

If you browse this site you'll see several unfinished projects. Some have only RAWs posted, those need translating from japanese. You can also clean the RAW pages and post the PSD files, that helps. Other projects already have the RAWs and the translated script, those need editing (cleaning and typesetting, you can do either or both). And for projects which have already been translated, cleaned and typeset, we need people to do quality check, and you can do that if you're fluent in English and have a good eye for detail.

But please carry on in the general thread:

Since Asukaori is gone I'm going to have a crack at typesetting this. I've never bothered with SFX before (I normally just stick a tl in the panel gaps instead) so it will take me a while to get used to that.

While I think it's better if you can typeset the SFX in a similar style to the original, you don't have to do that if it's a problem for you.

You can see here that Asukaori uses a mix of the techniques, depending on the situation.

So do try if you can, but if some of them cause major issues with redrawing, you can always put them on the side of the panel.

This looks basically fine to me. Your sound effects look good.

The one thing I notice is that you've introduced a few "orphans" in a couple balloons, or lines of text with only one word on them. These are particularly jarring when placed between two lines that are both longer than the orphaned word. As an illustrative example, I've rearranged one block of text here to eliminate orphans.

As a matter of course, I like to recommend Anon Black's typesetting guide ( http://translatoranon.tumblr.com/tagged/typesetting-guide ) and Red Hawk Scans' typesetting guide ( https://fallensyndicate.wordpress.com/typesetting-tutorial/ ); most of the advice I give is simply repeating content illustrated there, with many excellent examples.

Thank you for working on the series.

Ok I have finished with Chapter 39. I've given it a look over a couple of times and it all looks alright to me, if someone can confirm it's all good then I'll upload it to MangaDex.

Thank you very much for the help. I did some typesetting on Wataten over a year ago now so while most of the information seems to have been retained I'm still learning.

I also want to make sure I'm ok to be uploading chapters to MangaDex? I've given the latest 3 (Volume extras, 37 and 38) a thorough read and since they seemed ok I've uploaded them. The rest seem to be uploaded by random accounts and not just one person so hopefully that is ok.

Chapter 40 is ready for QC

Thanks, I have given the guidelines a read but when it says "upload the zip to Yuri Project's mediafire folder" I have no idea where that is or how to do it. The IRC linked there is dead also, so I'm not sure how up-to-date that information is.
As for the yuri project website, is there a way to for users to upload there? Or do I have to message somebody?
I'll hold off on uploading anymore chapters on MangaDex for now until I fully understand the process here.

>> No.23473

You're right, that doesn't really answer the question. To be honest, I don't really know, I'm just going by what seems to be the usual way things are done. Maybe someone will enlighten both of us.

Anyways, I don't see any errors in 39 or 40, they look fine to me.

>> No.23474

The guidelines haven't been updated since long ago.
In the old site, there was a plugin where I upload the zip which then uploads it to mediafire and mega.

>I think generally you want to wait for them to published on the homepage before uploading them anywhere else

Iirc if everyone in the project says the zip is fine (qc finished/no errors), procyon proceeds to upload it in the homepage.

>As for the yuri project website, is there a way to for users to upload there?

Since procyon handles this one, you'll have to wait an answer from them.

>> No.23475

>Iirc if everyone in the project says the zip is fine (qc finished/no errors), procyon proceeds to upload it in the homepage.

That's right. I rezip, reupload, choose a homepage image and fill in other info for the homepage. When it's up I notify Dynasty Reader and add a Reader link when I notice it's up on Dynasty.

>As for the yuri project website, is there a way to for users to upload there?

No, any change to the homepage needs full admin rights. I can give that to someone I trust, but I think it's going okay right now. Anyway once the info about a release is filled in the uploader would need to use a Java application that Kiena made to regenerate the homepage and upload the new pages to the server.

Hey 2hen4tai, thanks for picking this up.
Just forgot to say one thing, I used to do the editing using the pages from the website (https://www.sunday-webry.com/series/1105) because the resolution from the ripped volumes are very low (847x1200) compared to the ones on the site (1366x1935). I only used the extra pages, covers, table of contents, etc from the volumes and I still upscaled them a little. You have to use the Allow Right-Click extension to save page by page, I had saved all the pages up to ch53 so I'll upload and post them here.

No problem at all, it's an honour to be involved with such an amazing series such as this. I'm just happy that I was told about the vacancy, I only started looking for projects to help on a day or so after your leaving post.

Anyway I just downloaded the chapters you gave and wanted to open a random page to compare the quality. Well I just so happened to open page 2 of Chapter 42 and I see pic related (note the classroom info)
Anyone know the reason this was changed? Is the volume more accurate/up-to-date? Man, nothing is ever simple.

Also it might be in my head or my monitor or something but to me the lower resolution image actually looks a lot clearer side by side. The images you posted are larger but they appear blurrier to me.

>Anyone know the reason this was changed? Is the volume more accurate/up-to-date?

I honestly don't know. I've come across something like this before, if I remember correctly there was one of those little texts next to the bubbles and a sfx that was in the one on from the site but not in the one from the volume, can't remember which chapter.
Yeah, I've noticed although the resolution is bigger they're a little blurry but I used those either way because I prefer to work with larger pages. You could always use some sharpen or you can just use the ones ripped from the volume, it's up to you.

Nanoha interrupts Chidori here, but I think the way I wrote it, it looks like Chidori just trails off.

Chapter 49 QC

I decided to go ahead and get started as I had some spare time. If the previous editor comes back and wants to take back over, that's totally okay with me.

There were some SFX where I wasn't confident I could redraw the art (particularly the heart-beats early in the chapter), so I decided to just use SFX notes the whole way through for consistency's sake.

Let me know if anything is unsatisfactory, or if I should take a different approach for the SFX.

Chapter 50 looking for QC.

I opted to replace the SFX this time as it was more within my means. Worst case scenario I can just go back and put some more time into 49 to fix them, if anyone's unhappy with it.

I think the translation file is missing the sign and the sound effect in the attached picture. At least, the native text wasn't included.

Again, suggestions or advice of any nature are welcome.

>> No.23618

On chapter 50, I didn't translate the name of the restaurant because it's already on the sign in English next to the Japanese. You can just leave it there. The missing sound effect is "push".

One thing I noticed is that some of the text, especially when you use italics, looks kind of janky. Is there any way to make the text cleaner? I know that the original images are pretty low resolution. Maybe if you blew up the page before typesetting you could at least make the text look cleaner? I don't know much about image editing, so if that's stupid or crazy or a lot of work, then ignore me.

>> No.23619

I know what you mean regarding the text sometimes looking janky, but unfortunately I'm kind of a slave to the size of the raws. I don't know a ton about image editing either, but I think scaling up an image can end up lowering the quality of the art and/or distort it. In any case, yuri project guidelines doesn't want us scaling it up.

I'll fix the two pages and re-upload. Any more suggestions or are they good to go once I've done that?

>> No.23620
File: 00032.png -(61732 B, 515x403) Thumbnail displayed, click image for full size.

So I was fiddling with it a bit more, and I realized I could mess with the font thickness without having to re-adjust the size. In the attached picture:

"When you're dating" is what I'm currently using, "Sharp."

"That comes with [snip]" is "Strong."

"There are some [snip]" is "Smooth."

I can go through and switch the text to one of the other two, which both look better imo. I initially didn't want to fiddle with anything too much as I wanted to stick with what the previous editor was doing, but it's probably for the best that it gets changed.

Let me know which one you prefer.

(Side note, I realized I need to fix it's -> its in that text bubble).

>> No.23621

When I changed more text to strong, it starts to look too similar to bold italics, so it's a bit hard to tell them apart. I'll go with smooth for now and update the mega files.

Chapter 52 looking for QC

No particular concerns this time regarding the chapter.

Regarding your note about chapter 32, I went ahead and redid the bubble (attached) in case you're still in contact with the one who was editing at the time (Asukaori). Alternatively, they are still active on MD as asukasenpai, so I could message them and ask them to update the page, if you think it's worthwhile.

Chapter 53 looking for QC.

Again, no particular concerns, aside from maybe that the "Look at the budget!" line on p50 doesn't really fit the flow of the conversation, but it could be just a situation where someone interjects with something unrelated.

Side note, typesetting this chapter was a nightmare. When Nanoha's mind gets racing, it never stops.

Any suggestions welcome.

>> No.23625

Okay, whatever you did with the earlier chapters, it looks a little better. It's unfortunate that these ebook raws are so low quality. The only other choice is the online reader raws, which are just the same res images but resized.

Thanks for pointing out that missing line. Here's what those bubbles should say:

Right Bubbles

>if you're saying that you'd truly rather stay as friends, then that's one thing,
>but to restrict yourself before you have a chance to fall in love...

Left Bubble

>I think that'd be a bit of a shame.
>> No.23626

I'd say don't worry about changing chapter 32. That was months ago, people have already read it. And it doesn't really matter. If I went around uploading new versions every time a better phrasing occurs to me in hindsight, then it'd never end.

One thing, on page 46, that bubble should say, "and we went to see the fireworks!" (the "went" is missing).

>> No.23627

I think all the bubbles in that panel with the budget comment are just overheard conversations from the classroom. The next panel shows that Nanoha is zoning out, worrying about Chidori and not really paying attention to what's going on. Maybe, "The budget might be tight..." might be better, but either way, it doesn't really seem to flow from what's going on.

Good work on these chapters. Thank you.

>> No.23628

Awesome, thanks for all the suggestions. Made the corrections and updated the mega links, with the exception of the budget line because as you said, the whole panel reads more like random interjections.

So what's next? Do we need to contact Procyon, or will they come by on their own? Or do we need more QCing first?

In any case, I'll start working on the next chapters today.

>> No.23629

Chapter 54 looking for QC.

No concerns regarding the translation this time, though I did take two liberties which I'll mention here in case they're not okay:

  1. On page 59 (page 3 of 13), The large SFX were translated as "BAM" and "BLAM" separately. I couldn't find a way to make both words fit on the page in a way that didn't look awkward or obfuscate too much of the art, so I opted for "BLAM!!" split into thirds instead. Let me know if it looks okay. I think this also works with Nanoha's entrance later in the chapter, in which she humourously enters with a "BLAM!" as well.
  2. On page 63 (page 7 of 13), Chidori repeats "Mascot" in English, but since this obviously doesn't translate, it said to leave it out. For the sake of keeping the humourous demeanor she had at this point, (and admittedly to save me a bit of time redrawing), I decided to have her say "Mas-cute!" instead. I think this works in context and helps to show that she's in a jokey mood, but on the other hand, I've turned her into someone who makes bad puns so I'm pretty sure I can legally be sued for libel.

If it's decided that the bad pun can stay, I added a T/N to the credit's page explaining what she originally said. If it cannot stay, it's no hassle to go through and remove it.

Chapter 55 looking for QC.

No particular concerns this time.

This cultural festival arc has been fun but holy shit is it an editing nightmare. I can handle most redrawing but Chidori and her god damn fancy hair is my bane. Let me know if I need to go back and touch up anything, though I will say I spent way too much time redrawing her damn hair as it is.

Side note, I don't know if yuri-project has a discord, but if they do, or if you need to get in contact with me for anything, my username on there is Martin#4987.

Other side note, is it cool if I upload these chapters to MangaDex once they're approved and uploaded here, or is there a wait period?

>> No.23631

Maybe someone else will be along to QC. I usually just wait and see.

I think the "mascute" is fine. It does seem in character.

The bam/blam thing bothers me a little. I'd like there to be some impact sound in each panel, since that's what the SFX are there for. This kind of scene is very common in manga, and often copied directly into anime where they cut to a few frames showing the character's chest, then her hips, each with some drum or gong or that silly "boing" sound they love so much. I never know what English SFX to go with, I'm halfway tempted to just put "TITS" "ASS" right on the page. Anyways, if we removed the "!!", could you fit another sound around the second panel without covering the picture?

Her hair looks good to me. And good work on the signage, I especially like what you did with the haunted house sign. There are a lot more of those food stall signs coming up. Remember, they're totally unnecessary so skip them if you feel like it.

I think it's fine to upload them to MangaDex as soon as the final version is approved. They all seem to end up there anyways. Personally, I feel like the more readers we reach the better, and it doesn't matter to me where they read it.

I don't think there's a YP discord (unless everyone's been holding out on me), but my id is schuyguy#6894. Though I don't know how useful that is since I guess discord doesn't let you add friends unless you share a server?

>> No.23632

Yeah, I totally get what you mean about the SFX. They are two different panels that are intended to have two separate impacts.

I fiddled with it some more, but I wasn't sure what to go with. Here's a link showing some of the things I tried, let me know which you think would be best, if any:

Also, I'm going through and reworking chapter 49. The more I thought about it, the more I was unhappy with it. Hopefully I'll finish that and get started on 56 today.

Regarding discord, I think they changed that. I was able to send you a friend request.

I haven't been involved with this series, so I'm likely to be missing some context, but I can provide some QC, if you think it would be helpful. Be warned, though, I tend to operate sort of slowly.

Outside of these boards, the only other online platform for the Yuri Project to ever be officially sanctioned is an IRC channel, #yuriproject@irc.rizon.net . In my experience, the channel is pretty dead, occupied solely by lurkers, none of which have any moderater status.

Sure, feel free if you have the spare time. No worries if you're busy, of course. It's no rush, there are still five more chapters in the volume that need to be typeset.

I think this is good to release. Your redraws all look good to me.

One change that I think is optional, just if you feel like it, is to replace the vertical ellipses with horizontal ellipses. It's not a big enough deal to hold up a release, but if you feel like doing it, I think it helps maintain an uninterrupted reading flow.

If I might ask, where are you getting your raws? The ones I see in this thread are from >>23478 , but it looks like you're using a different version (with page numbers and chapter headings, possibly at a different resolution). I'm guessing you're using digital raws, but it looks like some of the black areas, especially in hair, have specs in them, as though they were dusty (pic related). This is consistent across the raw from >>23478 , though, where they're present, but not as noticeable, so probably it's fine not to do anything about them—it's just curious.

>> No.23637

Thanks for looking it over. I'll go through and change the ellipses.

I'm using the raws provided here >>23548, which are the digital raws from the publisher. Schuyguy mentioned that he's considering buying the physical volumes and scanning them in the future, but for now, this is the best we've got.

Regarding the dustiness, I can try and look into that, but I've never actually worked with fixing scans before, so it will probably take a while for me to learn how to fix that for future chapters.

I linked the ebook raws here:

I use the raws from the ebooks. There are also raws available ripped from the website. I think the website just uses a resize of the same quality raws used in the ebook, with some kind of processing. Looking again though, I'm not sure what's going on. Here's a side-by-side where I just upscaled the ebook raws to the same size as the web raws. In any case, I prefer the ebook raws because the web raws look kind of faded and blurry. Also, the ebook has some extras and stuff. And very rarely, a change to existing pages.

Chapter 56 looking for QC

This chapter was a bit of a pain in the ass, but it was also really adorable so all is forgiven.

On page 82, I agree that it's hard to think of what to put in that bubble. "Regret" isn't really something you'd say to scare someone in a haunted house, but what do you people normally say other than just shout at them? I tried to compensate for that by writing it in a spooky font. I think they may be referencing a TV show about a ghost? In any case, it's hard to think of what to put in there. Maybe just "Boo!"? Though, then that doesn't really fit the conversation later, where they're trying to come up with different things to say. Chidori is supposed to be undead right? Maybe something cliche like "brains" or "give me your soul"?

On page 87, I was thinking that perhaps

"Is it only me... that wants to kiss her...?"

would work a little better as

"Is it only me... that wants to kiss...?"

Obviously both make sense, but the latter gets rid of the potential of awkwardly misinterpreting it as Nanoha wanting to kiss herself.

On page 88, the signs in the top panel were untranslated. Though, I would be happy if I never had to typeset another sign again, so no worries if you don't want to go back and translate them.

On page 103, I changed the SFX "sheesh" to "geez~" as I think "sheesh" has a more exasperated / angry tone than the more playful frustration she was showing.

Forgot to mention, I'll re-do the credits pages and credit you as a quality checker.

I think the idea with the "regret" thing is that ghosts are the manifestations of people's intense negative emotions held at the time of death. うらめしや refers to bitterness or something along those lines. I was just hoping there was a less silly-sounding way to get that across. Though maybe it sounds silly in the original too, in which case we're off the hook.

That "wait, stay with us" line on the first page is still part of their ghost act, so maybe put it in a different font also?

On page 84, change "It's about time for your break" to "It's about time for our break". I realized that on 87 it's implied that originally they were all going to go explore the festival together, but then their plans changed when Kumako said she and the others had to stay back to help out.

As for the "wants to kiss her thing" I have no strong feelings either way. Go ahead and change it if you think it'd be better.

I guess I forgot about the signs on page 88. I'm pretty sure they're types of crepe, but it's too low res for me to actually read them. You get a reprieve.

>> No.23645

I'll do that.

>> No.23646

Thanks for the suggestions. I made all the changes you suggested and updated the mega link.

That makes sense regarding the "regret" line. Maybe "save us..." would convey that a little more clearly? Alternatively, it's probably no big deal to just leave it as is.

I very much appreciate the reprieve.

Thanks! Sorry for the trouble.

I went ahead and messaged the individual who uploaded the chapter to MangaDex, but I don't know if they check their private messages. I went ahead and updated the credits pages for the rest of the chapters, so at least we won't run into this issue again.

Chapter 57 looking for QC

On page 118, the SFX, "glow" was originally split between the top right and the bottom left, but I never really know how to make those not look awkward, so I just put "glow" in the top right and redrew the bottom left.

There were also a few bubbles where I struggled to fit the text nicely into the bubbles. You'll know them when you see them.

Any and all advice welcome.

Chapter 58 looking for QC.

These past two chapters have been very easy to edit. It's quite a relief.

On page 124, Mai says "Tsutsujimiya." I'm just looking for a bit of clarification, as we've had times where people call it "Tsutsuji," or "Tsutsujinomiya," and now "Tsutsujimiya." Are these all correct?

On page 129, there is a bubble that says

"Weeell, I don't know if it's what you're looking for, so this is just a suggestion, but..."

I just couldn't seem to find a way to fit the text in nicely. In the current version, I reduced the font size, the line spacing, and the kerning, as well as awkwardly broke the word "suggesting," and I only just barely fit it in. I was considering taking the second half of the sentence and using the written font to write it half outside the bubble, but I'm not sure. Let me know if I should try that, or something else, or if it's fine as is.

Chapter 60 looking for QC

Aaaand that's the end of the volume. What a tease, ending it in the middle of the arc like that. I'm not sure how I feel about Mai. It's interesting so far.

More bubble trouble this time, unsurprisingly. I actually had to redraw one (page 147, right bubble of bottom left panel). I didn't cover any actual art so I think it's okay. Normally I would just shrink the text, but since the raws are so small we'd be looking at like size 12-14 font, which starts to get pretty hard to read. Hopefully the bubble is fine.

I will do the volume extras tomorrow, and then I guess I get a little break! Though I'm quite eager to read the next volume.

Volume extras looking for QC

I lied about doing it tomorrow. There was a very minimal amount of work involved, so I just went ahead and did it.

On page 161, the SFX in the top panel wasn't translated.

Also on page 161, I'm wondering if something other than "Ugh" might be better? Personally, I associate "ugh" with disgust, which I don't think is what she's feeling. I do get that it's more just a noise of frustration in this context, so no big deal if you feel it's fine the way it is.

I'll make and upload credits pages for chapters 57-60 tomorrow. Actually tomorrow this time.

>> No.23652

Oh, that's definitely supposed to be Tsutsujinomiya. Sorry, my bad.

For that bubble on 129, how about changing it to "Weeell, I don't know if it's what you're looking for, but..."
Will that fit?

>> No.23653

That fits a lot more comfortably in the bubble, thanks. It's unfortunate as I think the longer line flows a little better (though this one is completely fine too), but there's not really much to be done about that, I suppose.

Just a few suggestions for chapter 51.

Oops, -> Oops...

A/while back,/we started/chatting a/bit. -> A while/back, we/started/chatting/a bit

Third row, center panel: Try adjusting the two text blocks so that the space between lines is aligns with the vertical center of the letters in the other. This should encourage the eye to see them as two distinct blocks, and not to try to read from the left of the left block to the right of the right block. It might also help to move the left block farther left and the right block farther right; I think the margins aren't yet so tight that you can't afford to budge them a little off-center (especially the right one, I guess the "in" on the left is cutting it close).

Here are some suggestions for chapter 52.

>> No.23661

Updated, thanks again!

I was experimenting with the emdash this chapter, so it was kind of all over the place. One of the times, "...I—", I actually did use an emdash and switch it to chinacat font, but since it reads like an endash to you, I went with your suggestion of changing them all to 200% hyphens.

I opted to remove the title from the first page, as the next page is the chapter cover.

Good catch on the "see see". I saw that when going through it before, but I guess I forgot to change it.

>> No.23662

There's only one more thing I see on chapter 51:

Guh— (Replace with 200% hyphen)

Oh? What/is it? You/almost/never ask/for advice.-> Oh? What/is it?/You almost/never ask/for advice. (Change lining to avoid orphan "almost;" normally, you want to avoid inverted triangles, but I think breaking at the sentence boundary is preferable in this case. Maybe move the block down to use the part where it narrows to your advantage, or separate the two sentences into two blocks to break up the transition from a short "is it?" to the wide "almost never")

>> No.23663

Just one detail:

I— (Is that a Chinacat emdash? It looks different than the emdash in "Y—Yeah..." Or is the one in "Y—Yeah..." the odd one out? The emdashes on 00037 and 00047 look more like the "I—" emdash.)

>> No.23664

Fixed the emdash. I don't really get what you mean about restructuring the text block. I think it's going over my head a bit. Nonetheless, I uploaded two versions of the page (29 and 29-alt), so let me know if either one is acceptable.

>> No.23665

Ahh, that one was actually a chinacat hyphen at 200%. When I switched it from the emdash, I didn't notice the font was still on chinacat. Sorry about that. Reuploaded.

>> No.23666

No, it looks like you got it. I was suggesting both 19 and 19-alt because I didn't know which would work better; as it is, I think I like 29-alt better, with the two separate blocks.

I think this is ready for release with 29-alt.

I think we're good.

Thank you for all your work. I'll try to get to the other chapters tomorrow.

I went over Chapter 51 and performed a QC over it. Page 28 (00030.png) when Kumako says "Well... it's someone goes to my prep school..." please note that a "who" needs to be added there. Additionally, Kumako's crush is simply mentioned as "someone" initially, but by Page 29 (00031.png) Asumi suddenly refers to Kumako's crush as "he" while at the same time quoting something Kumako hadn't actually said from any of the previous pages. If you wish to maintain the usage of referring to Kumako's crush as "him" then I would change the dialog on Page 28 so that her crush is addressed as such. Outside of this I see no other issues regarding grammar and dialog consistency. (A minor note though, on Page 32 (00034.png) when Nanoha starts elaborating after Kumako responds with "A shame...?" The continuous use of commas might be a bit much, but I understand the need for them. If there's any way to reduce the amount of commas then I'd suggest doing so. If not, please disregard this side note.) Thank you, and keep up the amazing work!

>> No.23669

Thanks for helping to QC! Updated.

Good call on the "who." It's been fixed now.

For the sentence

"I mean, 'cause, if you ask him out, true, you might get rejected, and even if you end up dating, you might get in a fight, or have other problems."

I adjusted it to

"I mean, 'cause, if you ask him out, true, you might get rejected. And even if you end up dating, you might get in a fight or have other problems."

Still a lot of commas, but I dropped one and broke it into two sentences.

Regarding Kumako's crush, I think it's best to wait for schuyguy's input on when / if the conversation made his gender clear. It's possible the girls are just assuming, in which case the dialogue works as is.

Also, if you'd like, feel free to give a name / alias and I'll add you to the credits page.

>> No.23670

Kumako doesn't refer to her crush by gender in the original. In fact, no one refers to her crush in any gendered manner throughout the entire conversation. But this is very common in Japanese. Usage of pronouns is rare, because once the subject is brought up you don't need to explicitly state it for the rest of the conversation. Unfortunately, you have to make a choice in English. Any translation of that exchange that avoided the use of gendered pronouns would sound unnatural in a way the original doesn't. If I used "them" then it would draw attention to the lack of a defined gender in a way the original doesn't. It just doesn't work the same way in English. If you refer to a singular person as "they", people ask for clarification.

So I tried a compromise. Kumako doesn't refer to this person as "him" until someone else does first. They made an assumption, and she went along with it. So if we ever do meet this person and they turn out not to be a "him", then we're covered.

>> No.23671

Alright, I adjusted

"[snip] you said you're "interested in him," does [snip]"

"[snip] you said you're "interested" in him, does [snip]"

That way she's not misquoting, only assuming. Hopefully with this, the chapter should be good to go!

On pg 50, I made some of your suggested changes to the last bubble, but /she worked really/ is definitely not possible. I think you might've meant to type "but still,/she worked/really hard." which did indeed fit a lot better.

The rest have all been done as you said.

Also, regarding the emdashes, I'll go through chapters 54-60 today and fix them. Sorry about that.

Don't worry too hard about the emdashes, you can do them one chapter at a time, if you want. As long as they get done eventually.

I actually meant to put "but still,/she worked/really/hard", but it looks fine with "really" and "hard" on the same line, so I wouldn't bother changing it.

That said, just a couple more things, and we should be good:

Well, you look kind of pale... And you were whispering with Kumako... (~2px right to give the "with" a bit of a margin)

I-I was asking Kumako for help because... I couldn't get into my costume... -> I—I was asking Kumako for help because... I couldn't get into my costume... (Hyphen to emdash)

Regarding chapter 54:

I changed P60 to "Nurse" in english but I'm not sure if it's actually an improvement. Given the size of the raws, we're looking at size 8 font, so it is both barely legible and fails to look like it's actually written on the page. That said, being able to read it is certainly a better option than not, so I'm fine with it either way.

Other changes made! I didn't like that orphaned "A" either.

Regarding Chapter 55:

Can't believe I missed that SFX on page 71. Pretty silly of me.

I adjusted the "Sorry!" line as recommended, I think it looks better.

Changing the alignment of the text looked really awkward to me. I also tried resizing the font, but nothing really worked. In the end I settled on breaking up the word "sweating" into "sweat- / ing". I think it's a bit better.

Let me know what you think.

>> No.23695

I think we should ship these two chapters.

I agree with your assessment about the "nurse;" even if the word isn't entirely legible, it's better to have the English contour of the word than the Japanese outline of it.

With regards to "sweating," I think your judgement is sound, and that this may be an example of when a hyphenation may ultimately be the right way to go even though it's not strictly necessary.

One issue about text shaping on chapter 60:

I know there are parts of Nanoha I don't know about, and she has friends I've never met... (The left margin on "I've never" is tight; how does it look if you scoot it right? It might make sense to "center" this block as though around a slanting line parallel to the right panel border.)

>> No.23705

Updated chapter 56. Those were some intimidating suggestions. I only started using photoshop about a month ago, so I really struggled with some of them.

00082.png / 00104.png
The Tsutsuji sign in particular, I think it would take me around 2-3 hours to try and replicate the effect in a way that looks natural. I had a go at it, but it looked really awkward, especially since I don't think I can make use of the clone tool for that situation.

I tried my best on the "Sexy Nurse" writing, let me know if it's any better. I tried mimicking the placement of the letters "T H E" in the original, but since "SEXY" is four letters, the S was left looking awkward and out of place.

Again, I tried to lift the previous panel, but I don't know how to replicate that horizontal line effect on the other flashback panels, so it looks a bit out of place. If it looks awkward to you guys too, I can try to edit the flashback panel myself.

Changed the font to one that's a little uneven and shaky feelings, as well as being lowercase. I think it helps to show she's kinda defeated sounding there, but if you have another font you think I should use, please let me know.

In short, all changes made except for the Tsutsuji sign. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Good point about the "glow" on ch 57. I had the same worry but I really liked the font so I left it initially, but it's probably best to change it.

For the volume extras, I actually did change that page and forgot to upload it. For the first SFX, we decided to go with "slide" on the top panel rather than "smear," since it helps to contrast that she's being delicate / applying it properly at first, and then she smears it everywhere after getting embarrassed.

I think the "sexy nurse" is improved, yes.

If you don't want to do the TsuTsuju banner effect, that's fine.

I can tell the "gloom" panel on 00092 is a bit different from the others now that you point that out, but I can't say for certain whether or not I would have noticed otherwise. I think this is acceptable to release with; ultimately, I leave the decision on your hands. If you think this looks good enough, then we'll release it; if you're not satisfied with it, then you an either try to tweak it so it looks better, or try editing the panel yourself. (If you want to try to tweak Asukaori's panel, then I would guess the best approach is to sample the overlay texture from one of the other montage panels, tile the texture in a layer over the panel in question, and make sort of transparent, but I have no idea how well that would actually work without trying it for real.)

In short, I would be willing to release this, but I leave the final decision with you, the editor, based on whether or not you're satisfied with the "gloom" panel on 00092.

Besides that, I have only a couple things I didn't notice earlier for the rest of the chapters:

Chapter 57

You/remember/Mai-chan/from the/year/below you,/right? -> You/remember/Mai-chan/from the/year below/you, right? (Chane lining to avoid orphan "year")

Chapter 58

Chapter 57 -> Chapter 58 (Increment chapter number)

I think chapters 59, 60, and the extras are good to release, once we get to them.

I did as you suggested regarding the gloom panel, and I think it's an improvement. It more closely resembles the raws now, though I wasn't able to get the horizontal lines to stand out quite as distinctly as I'd like them to, but I think it's fine as is. Thanks for the advice!

Chapter 61 looking for QC

Here we go again! I don't have much to say about this chapter aside from the last page.

For the "flush" SFX, I decided to mimick the placement of the "かああああ" in the raws. Let me know if you think it'd look better if it were written more conventionally.

Also, I did my best with the text pushing the edges in the bottom right bubble, but things got a bit sketchy on the last few lines. Everything in the brackets is lost:

(I mi)ght feel guil(ty)
(o)r somethin(g...)

Hopefully enough of the text is there for the readers to figure out what it says.

I think we're good to dump 56 through the end of the volume on 'em.

I'm glad you think the advice is helpful. I strive always to support the cause of High Quality, and to try to contribute in some positive way to the release. Most of my advice comes from the two guides I mentioned in ; Anon Black's typesetting guide, which is currently accessible only in a disorganized form on her tumblr ( https://translatoranon.tumblr.com/tagged/guide/page/2 ); and Red Hawk Scan's tutorial, which has been republished after the groups demise, but whose republished host currently is filled with broken image links, so you need to go through the Internet Archive to see their valuable reference material: https://web.archive.org/web/20190316162230/https://fallensyndicate.wordpress.com/typesetting-tutorial/ . If you haven't seen these before, I think they'll probably provide a very solid foundation for how to go about things like shaping and styling text. Most of the advice I give is parroting these guides in some way.

And thank you for all of your work. I'm always glad there are people who are willing to do the editing so I don't have to. I think you're in a very good place for someone who's been editing for a short time, and I hope that the work you're contributing to continues to further your development.

Chapter 63 looking for QC

Had to have some text overlap the edge of the bubble on the first page. It's already reduced to size 14, so it's the best I can do. I did see Anon Black talking about this type of situation in her most recent tutorial, actually!

On the last page, since we're converting vertical ellipses to horizontal ones, I had to change the "...<3<3". I used the hearts from the "Ladylike BB" font (the same font used for Chidori's handwriting). If they're too cutesy, I can change them to Alt+8 hearts, or just copy and paste the ones from the raws.

On page 5, I reduced by .5 px as recommended.

Page 12 seemed to be working on the mega for me, but maybe that was because I also have the file saved locally? In any case, I attached it as an image in this reply just in case.

For page 13, it looked really awkward (the word "most" was centered, but the "the" looked completely out of place). I decided to change "at the most..." to "at most..." since they are both grammatically correct and mean the same thing. Let me know if that's not okay, though.

I'll get to work on the credits pages now!

Updated! I totally agree with what you're saying about the title page. I'd made my mind up that if you noticed it, I'd remove it. Though, that is the first time I added any dumb jokes since chapter 49. I won't add any more, as people almost certainly wouldn't check whether or not it was present in the raws.

I went with Rich Man, Poor Man on p50. I don't actually know what Daifugou is either, so I couldn't add a note about it.

>> No.23748

I think the edit for this chapter is good.

Here's my opinion on the "dirty girl" line:

I think it sounds fine, and fits well enough. It's true that it doesn't really reference an archetype of the "sexy high school student," which I think is the only real weakness of this translation, but I think that referencing the archetypal "dirty girl" is a fine cultural replacement.

If you're looking for alternatives, you might try something like "Whoa, look at this sexy high school girl!" or "Look at this sexy high schooler!" or "Oh, I see, going for the 'sexy high school girl' image!" or "We've got a sexy high schooler on our hands!"

Alternatively, you could use "dirty girl" in any of these formulations if you think "sexy high schooler" is too stilted for a high schooler to be using.

>> No.23749

The Rich Man, Poor Man block is positioned a bit oddly; you might be able to shift it up a bit, so the narrow "poor man" line is aligned with the narrowed bubble at that point, and you might be able to change the lining by putting the "Well" on its own line. "Well,/it was/the first/time we've/played/rich man,/poor man in/forever."

>> No.23750

I put in a note in my translation for Daifugo. I have no idea what "rich man, poor man" is, so could you just go with what I had originally? Just leave it as "Daifugo" and put a note on the page just saying "Daifugo is a card game".

There's a Wikipedia page for it, so I figure if people want to know more, they can just google it.

You're right. Instead of "you picked the wrong person/ to complain to", how about "you picked the wrong person/ to ask for advice". Though I used "consultation" in the chapter title, I don't really want to use it in the dialogue because "consult" just doesn't seem like a word Mai would be using here.

And for the other one too. Not sure why I went with what I did there, your suggestion is good.

Seeing the replacement on 00077, it seems sort of like a strange thing to come after "Did I shave?"; wouldn't you know whether or not you shaved without having to compare yourself to others? Doing a bit of googling, it looks like ボディーケア is a catch-all term for beautification practices, and isn't restricted to shaving. I'd propose revising "Did I shave?" to something like "Is my skin in good shape?" or "Is my figure in good shape?"

>> No.23779

Chapter 68 has two "undecrypted file"s; it looks like they're 00084 and 00089.

The pages that I can see look good to me.

Very strange. Mega doesn't indicate to me that they're undecrypted when I'm looking at my own folders. When I access the folder through the shared link, though, I can see that they're undecrypted. I'll make sure to check the shared link in the future.

>> No.23781

I took the lines there to be things that someone would worry about when they're naked in a room with other naked people, not just stuff they only notice in comparison. ボディーケア seems to encompass a large variety of different aesthetic care stuff, so I went with one that seemed simple.

If you think it doesn't work, then how about "does my skin look okay?"

Quite a tricky one. Lots of SFX (and redrawing). If anything looks off, please let me know.

There were a lot of split SFX that would look awkward in English. On Page 99 for example, I tried just writing "Ignore" up top, but then it looks like it's only Chidori ignoring, so I decided to write it vertically in between the girls. Same with the "sulk" in the next panel, and the "Pout" on p104.

For the "glare" on p100, and both "glare" and "snap" on p104, I decided to keep it in one corner and redraw the other corner. I can split it if you think it'll look better, I just find something like "Gl- are" looks awkward.

I think this translation isn't necessarily wrong, but think I can see where some of the confusion comes from.

> それって… 私からって ことだよね.。。
> You're saying... that I should go to her.

I don't think there's anything wrong with this one, and I think you understood it just fine.

> 子供みたいなこと 言ってんじゃないの! 自分たちのこと でしょーが!
> We're not talking about little kids, this is your problem!

The parsing on this one is a little weird, and I'm not the most confident in my own analysis, but I'll share it.

I think the ~んじゃない is a colloquial imperative. In the same way that someone might shout 「立って!立つんだ!!」 to mean. "Stand up! you've gotta stand up!" I think she's saying 言ってんじゃないの! To mean "don't say" or "shouldn't say." 子供みたいなこと is the thing she shouldn't say; I interpret the line as closer to "Don't go talking like a little kid! You can deal with this yourselves, can't you?"

>> No.23810

Okay, thanks. I guess I was confused by the みたいなこと part there, I thought if it was "talking like a kid" she'd just have said みたいに.

>> No.23811

There's a slight difference, in that I would understand 子供みたいに言ってんじゃない to mean something more like, "Don't be saying things in the same manner a little kid would say them," whereas I understand 子供みたいなこと言ってんじゃない as meaning something closer to "Don't be saying things that seem like a kid would say them." The focus is less on the manner of speaking, and more on the thing being said.

I wrote a lot of words for this one, but there aren't actually that many suggestions.

>> No.23828

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Made all the changes on chapter 70.

On chapter 71, I made the changes for 119.png (missing text) and 124.png ("we promised!").

For p120 ("look around" text block), the left justifying looked really awkward. I shrunk the text by .5px. Let me know if it's better, or if it's still bugging you. I can also post a left justified version if you'd like. It may just be me having an unfair bias against left/right justified text blocks.

For p121, ("Most Popular: Mini Wooden Shoe Series"), I had skewed the text. The reason for this is that the shape of the box is in is more like a rhombus than a standard rectangle. Also, in the raw, the vertical lines (e.g. "No. 1") are still straight, while the text itself is angled. I've switched it to a rotated version as suggested, but personally, I'm of the opinion that it looks worse.

For p126, I've done as you suggested (top left "Face" and bottom right "off"), but I still don't like it.

>> No.23829

I think chapter 70 is good to go.

For chapter 71:

I trust your judgment on the left-justification. I think decreasing the font slightly was a good call, and it looks better now.

Man, I felt so clever when I recognized the sheared text, but you're right, it doesn't look very good this way. Let's go back to the way you had it originally, I think that was the right call.

I think the "face off" looks a lot better this way than it did previously; at the very least, it's reads as "face off" and not "off face" much more naturally. You might play around with the angles to see if you can make it better, but I think this is at least acceptable. I have a feeling that no matter what, we'll have to do something a little awkward in order to get the words to read in the opposite of their typical order.

>> No.23830

Updated! I adjusted the "off" just slightly, so that it's not reaching all the way into the panel below it. I think you're right that there's probably no way to be completely happy with it since we have to split "face off" right to left, and that's always going to look a little bit awkward.

Also added a credits page to 71, so hopefully we're good to go.

>> No.23831

Here is chapter 72, looking for QC!

I struggled with some bubbles, so there may be a lot of splits that need adjusting.

I think the lining is as good as it's going to get, for the most part; there's only one instance I thought might be made better:

Glover/Garden was/the site of/the home/of the/successful/merchant,/Thomas/Glover. -> Glover/Garden/was the/site of the/home of the/successful/merchant,/Thomas/Glover. (Change lining)

The rest of the edit is good, I think.

Chapter 73 looking for QC:

On page 148, I tried to recreate the unevenness of the handwritten text in the bottom panel. It might be a bit overkill, though. Maybe it'd be better to just write it normally?

Just want to say, I really loved this volume. I think this is probably the best one yet, which I wasn't expecting. The fluff was great as always, but the fight was very entertaining too. And it genuinely feels like they came out stronger on the other end.

Also, Nanoha imagining Chidori as her bride was absolutely adorable.

I added a notice regarding the plan to wait for the next volume release. I figure it's worth mentioning so people don't incorrectly assume we've abandoned it. Though, if you don't think it's necessary, I can remove it.

>> No.23843

One thing about 73, I don't know if that note on page 148 is necessary. I'm not 100% certain that's even what's going on, and I personally didn't even notice the all the "piyo!!"s until probably the 4th or 5th time looking at that page. So I don't know if it adds much to the reader's experience. What do you think?

As for the ending note, I think it's a good idea. Maybe change it to mention that the volume 7 release will probably be sometime this spring? They haven't announced a date or anything, but I think that's a safe bet, given their schedule in the past.

I'm glad we've finally caught up. Good work! Also, the next chapters are a two-parter titled "Naked Together", so you have that to look forward to.

>> No.23844

Yeah, I think you're probably right about the note regarding "Piyo!!". There are similar situations, like the "BLEGH" panel with the ghosts and pots in the background, where nobody will really get what's going on there, but it's not significant enough to even register anyway. I personally wouldn't have given the background a second thought if it hadn't been pointed out, so it probably doesn't need to be.

Good idea! I'll update it mentioning expected release date.

That is exciting but also terrible because now I want to read it even more.

>> No.23845

Let's get chapter 72 out there.

I think the scattered lettering on page 148 is fine. If anything, you could probably take it a little further—I've noticed that editors tend to play new ideas safe, and toe the line more than cross it.

I agree that the note about the chicks probably isn't necessary; however, I would suggest just moving it to the endpage. That way, it's still there for anyone who cares to read it, but it doesn't clutter up the page itself, or interrupt the flow of reading. That's what I like to do for translation notes in general, anyway.

Besides that, I think chapter 73 is ready for release.

"I'm sure it... was an accident."

Other than that, I think it's good.

Chapter 77 for QC!

We're heading toward the climax of Mai's arc, and I really love the way it's being handled. This chapter was definitely something I think most readers would have caught on to by now, but it's still pretty heartbreaking to see her realize it herself. She's just way too kind hearted to want to break them up. It's such a nice way to handle a rival arc.

Chapter 78 for QC!

For 55.png, maybe it would be better to change the bubble that says "Right...?" to "...Right?" to better match the original text.

When I first looked through the raws and saw this new girl, I was pretty skeptical. That said, I really like the angle she's coming from here. She clearly cares a lot for Mai and is trying really hard to connect with her and help her, but Mai is completely shutting her down. It's an incredibly frustrating situation for the manager to be in. It's really easy to empathize with her. It makes her feel like more than just a rebound.

Chapter 79 for QC!

This was a long time coming. I'm happy she told Chidori first. I love the way these two have gotten closer. It's really interesting to watch how, the more Mai gets to know Chidori, and the more she likes Chidori as a person, the harder it is for her to stomach her own feelings for Nanoha. She's found herself in a pretty difficult position, but I think she's making the right call here by talking to Chidori about it.

Oh, I got so wrapped up in talking about the story that I forgot to mention the actually relevant bit:

I decided against typesetting the "Ding" SFX on the last few pages because 1. I think having "Ding" plastered everywhere in english would be distracting and take away from the impact of the scene 2. I think it would generally look a lot worse than what the author did, and 3. it'd be a nightmare to typeset. Any input on how it's handled right now would be helpful.

I also decided to only put the SFX note on the first two pages it appears, because afterwards the conversation gets increasingly serious, and I have enough faith in our readers that they don't need to be reminded 4 times what the SFX means.

Here's chapter 80 for QC!

Chapter 81 for QC!

Aaand chapter 82 for QC!

Similar to the Dings I mentioned in >>24511 , I've opted to not typeset the rain SFX. "Psshhhhhhh" "Shaaaaa" etc in serious moments seem a little silly. I've instead put SFX notes for them for the first few instances in each chapter, and then left them unlabelled in the later instances of the chapters (again, just hoping that the readers will remember the meaning).

What an absolutely lovely arc, and a beautiful way to conclude the story of Mai's love for Nanoha. I hope she remains in the series in some capacity.

Other than that, I think they just need credits pages and we'll be good to release.

Uh. I somehow misspelled basketball as "bastetball" on ch 81 page 16. ...Anyway, here's the corrected page. Also updated the mega and MD.

Here's chapter 83 for QC!

Cute chapter. It does seem like there's a bit of a disconnect, where Chidori is more concerned about keeping their relationship a secret than Nanoha is.

Here's Ch 84!

And the volume extras!

Another great volume. Every chapter was good, as far as I'm concerned. The Mai arc was lovely. I'm quite eager to see how the next volume turns out, given the mention of the upcoming arc on the last page!
